Norwegian Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Tord Lien, has cut the first steel plate for the Johan Sverdrup utility and living quarters (ULQ) topside.
The Johan Sverdrup platform will be located on the Statoil-operated Johan Sverdrup field, offshore Norway.
Lien cut the first steel plate together with Kvaerner apprentice Jens Erik Eriksen on Thursday, March 31, at Kvaerner Stord in Norway.
The minister said: “This is an important day for Johan Sverdrup project and Kvaerner. The development of Sverdrup will provide thousands of jobs and huge revenues to the country. What has happened in Stord today is an important step towards the planned production start in 2019.”
Lien stressed the importance of this project, and its steel-cutting milestone, for securing jobs in the Norwegian supply industry at a time of low oil prices and low activity levels.
The minister also added he was looking forward to the results of the Johan Sverdrup field development.
