Byron Energy has started drilling the SM 71 #1 well, located in South Marsh Island Block 71, in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
The company is using the Hercules 205 jack-up drilling rig for the operation. The rig spudded the well April 3 2016, and the well is now drilling ahead at 671 feet measured depth.
The well, located offshore Louisiana, 250 km southwest of New Orleans, has a planned total measured depth of approximately 7.451 feet (2,272 meters) and total vertical depth of 6,900 feet (2,104 meters). Byron expects the well will take approximately 20 days to drill and evaluate.
The company will be hoping the operation goes without difficulties this time. Namely, Byron’s previous well SM 6 #2 (“SM 6 #2”) well, located in the South Marsh Block 6 lease (“SM 6”), was not completed as the drill pipe got irretrievably stuck and Byron made the decision to temporarily abandon the well, and move the rig to the current well.
