The construction of a freight port north of Nynäshamn, the Stockholm Norvik Port, can start in 2016, after the Swedish Supreme Court issued a positive ruling today by deciding not to allow permission for an appeal to be heard.
The planned port is important for the establishment of an efficient, eco-friendly supply of goods to the Stockholm region, according to Ports of Stockholm’s Authority.
“ After a long process in this important project for the Stockholm region, the Supreme Court has issued its final ruling and we can at last begin to build the Stockholm Norvik Port,” Johan Castwall , Ports of Stockholm’s Managing Director , says.
Nine out ten goods arrive by sea in Sweden, with many of them destined for the Stockholm region. The new port will make it possible to transport goods as close to their final destination as possible by sea, Ports of Stockholm’s Authority explains.
“By ensuring that we have the capability to welcome vessels that are becoming ever larger we are creating financially and economically attractive transport possibilities for our region. The Stockholm Norvik Port, with its natural depth, short approach lanes and close proximity to the market is an important piece in the goods supply jigsaw puzzle,” Castwall adds.
Ports of Stockholm is expected to welcome the first vessel into port about three years after the start of construction.
The decision comes on the same day when one of the largest shipping companies, CMA CGM, announced it would sail its vessels directly to the consumer market in the Stockholm region, bringing its boxships to the Frihamnen’s container terminal.
The Ports of Stockholm saw an increase of five percent in the number of TEUs shipped, compared to the same period of the previous year. These are the strongest ever first quarter numbers, according to the port authority.
