Dutch offshore grid operator TenneT and its Danish counterpart Energinet.dk can now start with the construction of the COBRA cable, a submarine connection between the Dutch and Danish power grids, after clearing all permits necessary in the Netherlands.
The COBRA cable will allow for exchange of renewable energy between the two countries, and it has been designed to enable a connection to an offshore wind farm at a later stage.
TenneT and Energinet.dk will begin with preparatory work by the end of this summer. In the autumn, the construction of the COBRA cable will start. The connection will be put into operation in 2019.
The High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable, which will have a capacity of approximately 700MW, is about 325km long and will run from Eemshaven in the Netherlands via Germany to Endrup in Denmark. For the construction of the COBRA cable, various permits were required in both the Netherlands and Denmark, but also in Germany, since the connection will partly be laid on German seabed.
