Wärtsilä on Monday said it has been selected to provide its propulsion machinery packages for two dual-fuel ro-ro passenger ferries being built for Caledonian Maritime Assets of Scotland.

Additionally, Wärtsilä will also supply extended engineering and site support services the company said in its statement.

The vessels being built by Ferguson Marine Engineering are the first dual-fuel vessels to be built in the UK, Wärtsilä said.

Finnish engine manufacturer, besides the support services, will supply each of the two 102-metre long ships with two 6-cylinder 34DF main engines capable of operating on either LNG or conventional diesel fuels.

It will also provide two auxiliary engines, gearboxes, shaft lines, seals and bearings, controllable pitch propeller systems, tunnel thrusters, the Wärtsilä LNGPac storage and supply system, plus extended commissioning and engineering. The ships will feature a twin screw dual-fuel mechanical propulsion driveline, Wärtsilä added.

The ferries are scheduled to enter service during the second half of 2018, and will operate on various routes along the west coast of Scotland.
