Seabed Preparation for Finnish Ice-Proof Wind Farm to Start in June

Seabed preparation works for the 40MW Tahkoluoto offshore wind farm will start off Pori, Finland, in early June, according to Suomen Hyötytuuli Oy, the owner and developer of what is to be the first ice-proof offshore wind farm.

The works will include dredging and excavation to prepare the seabed for the wind farm’s ten foundations and subsea cables, and is expected to be completed by the end of August.

The marine traffic will be occasionally restricted due to safety reasons.

In March 2016, Suomen Hyötytuuli picked Jan De Nul NV as the main contractor for marine construction. Jan De Nul is in charge of dredging, seabed construction work, and the installation of foundations and wind turbines.

Technip Offshore Finland will supply gravity-based steel foundations, while ABB is in charge of the substation and main transformers. Prysmian Finland will supply the subsea cable for the wind farm.

The EUR 120 million Tahkoluoto OWF comprises ten 4MW Siemens turbines scheduled for commissioning during the autumn of 2017.

Siemens had already supplied one 2.3MW turbine to Suomen Hyötytuuli for the Pori pilot project in 2010, which will now be accompanied by the ten wind turbines of the Tahkoluoto wind farm.
