MSC Maya visited on June 2 the Port of Gdansk, becoming the biggest containership ever to visit the port. The ship’s design enable it to carry nearly a thousand containers more than the Triple-E class vessels which called at Gdansk’s port before.
MSC Maya, operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), was designed to transport a total of as many as 19,224 20-foot containers, which – when put one after the other – would stretch out in a line over 117 km long.
Built in 2015, the 196,000 dwt vessel is 396 meters long and 59 meters wide and has a gross tonnage of 193,000.
Until now, the 2M (Maersk Line, MSC) container shipping alliance’s ocean line to the DCT Gdansk has been operated solely by the Maersk fleet. With MSC Maya’s call at the port, it has been joined by the fleet of the alliance’s second operator.
The vessel departed from the Port of Gdansk on June 6. MSC Maya’s AIS data show it is currently in the Baltic Sea – Kattegat underway using engine.
Over 530,000 TEUs were handled at the port’s quays between January and May this year, what is 3 percent more than in 2014 – a record year for containers in Gdansk.
