RWE has carried out an emergency exercise at the Nordsee Ost offshore wind farm in Germany.

The RWE team, together with partners, exercised an emergency rescue of an injured offshore worker on a Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV).

The crew on board the CTV, a rescue helicopter with pilots, a winch operator, ambulance and paramedics, and more than 13 other people were directly involved in the exercise.

The exercise scenario envisaged the initial medical treatment under telemedical instructions and bringing an emergency physician and paramedics to the CTV.

In collaboration with the Offshore Response and Safety GmbH, WIKING Helikopter Service and the ADAC air rescue an emergency, RWE has developed a rescue concept that covers, inter alia, a professional initial care of sick employees and those involved in an accident, the coordination and use of emergency medical teams, the establishment of internal crisis units and an extensive communication with external parties. This concept has been put to test during the exercise.

Emergency exercises at the Nordsee Ost offshore wind farm are performed periodically, so the theoretical emergency planning can be put into practice. The first emergency drill was carried out in 2014, during the construction phase. This exercise involved the rescue of a person from a wind turbine foundation.
