On 15 June, Korean state-owned company Korea Offshore Wind Power (KOWP) and Dutch offshore wind consultancy Wind Minds will sign a letter of intent on cooperation in developing one of the first offshore wind projects in Korea.
The Southwest Offshore Wind Project is planned to have a total capacity of 2.5GW, with 60MW installed in the test phase, and a further 400MW added by 2022 as part of the demonstration project, before it reaches its full size.
The project is located in the Yellow Sea, southwest of Seoul, where the seabed is characterized by a thick layer of mud, providing additional challenges to build and install wind turbines, according to Wind Minds.
KOWP wants to use Wind Minds’ experience and Dutch expertise in project management, research, engineering assistance, and logistical matters to develop one of the first offshore projects in Korea.
Wind Minds said it expects that this cooperation will lead to more opportunities for Dutch companies active in research, but also for those in the supply chain, such as Van Oord, Damen, Gusto, and Huisman.
The agreement will be signed at Wind Minds’ booth at Wind Days 2016 in Rotterdam.
