China, the world’s largest energy consumer, is estimated to have 90 trillion cubic meters (tcm) of natural gas resources, the country’s Ministry of Land and Resources announced on Monday citing results of a study completed last year.
This represents a rise of 158 percent when compared to the last assessment completed in 2007, the ministry said.
A total of 50 trillion cubic meters of natural gas resources can be exploited, the ministry said, adding that this is a rise of 127 percent from the 2007 assessment.
According to the ministry, this growth is attributed to increased exploration and improved technology.
China’s shale gas resources are estimated to be at 122 trillion cubic meters, of which 22 tcm is exploitable, the ministry said.
