Gaz Métro’s unit, Gaz Métro GNL, began the delivery of liquefied natural gas to the Stornoway Renard diamond mine in the Otish Mountains, in Northern Québec, Canada.
Commenting on the commencement of LNG supplies to Northern Québec, Sophie Brochu , president and CEO of Gaz Métro noted that the power plant, serving the Renard mine, will “reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 43 percent” due to the switch to LNG.
The delivery of liquefied natural gas to the Renard mine is a part of Gaz Métro’s project, started in 2014, to expand its Montréal liquefaction, storage and regasification plant to meet needs for regions that are remote from the gas network, particularly Northern Québec and the Côte-Nord.
The government, through Investissement Québec took a CAD$50 million stake in Gaz Métro GNL, the unit of Gaz Métro responsible for the expansion project and marketing of liquefied natural gas.
