India’s largest importer of liquefied natural gas, Petronet LNG is reportedly planning to build an import terminal at Kutubdia islands in Bangladesh.
Prabhat Singh , managing director and CEO of Petronet LNG was quoted by Press Trust of India as saying that the company proposed to build an import terminal with a 5 million tons annual capacity.
Petronet has also been shortlisted to build the 3.5 mtpa terminal in Bangladesh.
The 5 mtpa terminal has been proposed during a recent visit of petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan to Dhaka, in order to meet the growing demand for power generation. Plans for the terminal are expected to be presented during this month.
However, Petronet LNG is looking for security in payment assurances that would cover the company’s investment in case it has to abandon Bangladesh.
The location for the terminal at Kutubdia islands has a natural harbor and breakwater with good draft, ideal for setting up an LNG terminal, Singh concluded.
Petronet LNG has not responded to an email by LNG World News seeking comment on the report by the time this article was published.
