Global Wind Service (GWS) is starting up the Block Island Wind Farm project after making the preparations to deliver manpower, tools and safety equipment.
“We are very proud to be a part of bringing offshore wind to the U.S. and we see great future opportunities for their growing offshore wind industry,” said Chief Commercial Officer Michael Olsen . “We have worked with the Haliade turbine on a number of occasions, firstly at the Belwind test site and more recently the test turbine at Østerild. Our technicians will use this experience to perform the installation safely and efficiently.”
GWS was awarded the contract for lift supervision and installation of GE Renewable Energy’s Haliade 150-6MW nacelles late last year.
In 2009, Fred. Olsen Windcarrier acquired the majority stake in the company.
A few days ago, Fred. Olsen Windcarrier’s jack-up installation vessel Brave Tern arrived in St. Nazaire, France, to pick up the nacelles for the Block Island Wind Farm. The vessel will transport five nacelles across the Atlantic and install them at Block Island wind farm site before returning to Europe.
The turbine installation is scheduled to start by the beginning of August.
