Maersk Training will be expanding its Global Wind Organisation (GWO) training locations and making the courses available at its centre in Aberdeen.

GWO training is one of the industry requirements for anyone wishing to work in the growing renewables sector and Maersk Training is now the only provider to offer all five compulsory modules in Scotland, the company said.

David Armour, Health & Safety Advisor at SDIC Power Scotland, said: “By establishing the new GWO training facilities in Aberdeen, Maersk Training has responded to the expanding requirements of the offshore renewables industry. These facilities will allow our personnel to receive the same high level of training we have come to expect from Maersk Training and at a more convenient location for our projects.”

To comply with the standards for Basic Safety Training, which aims to support an injury-free work environment, the course consists of modules which are designed to cover: Manual Handling, First Aid, Fire Awareness, Work at Height and Sea Survival. The safety standards are based on risk assessments and factual incident statistics within the industry related to the installation, service and maintenance of wind turbines.

Maersk Training’s Managing Director in Aberdeen, John Abate, said: “We are delighted to extend our established GWO training in Scotland, in order to serve a wider market. Not only will this see us provide a much-needed, all-encompassing training solution, but it will also allow those located in the area to consider retraining into the growing Renewables sector, following the recent downturn in the Oil and Gas industry, as they will have many valuable skills which are transferrable.”

For those already working in the renewables sector, Maersk Training in Aberdeen is offering the GWO Refresher courses, so that current certificates can be renewed.
