Japanese engineering firm JGC Corp is considering building a small liquefied natural gas plant on Russia’s remote Sakhalin island, according to a statement by the Sakhalin region government.
The Sakhalin Island is the home of Russia’s only producing LNG plant, Sakhalin-2, with a capacity of about 10 million tons per annum.
Sakhalin Region’s Governor Oleg Kozhemyako met on Monday with Masanori Suzuki, a Director and a member of JGC Corp’s Board, where they discussed the possibility of building the LNG plant, the statement said.
According to the statement, the liquefaction plant would be supplied from the Aniva gas fields in Sakhalin.
Suzuki intends to visit the gas fields, explore possible sites for the plant, and select the option that requires minimal construction costs, the statement reads.
