Following the expected completion by the end of 2016 of local fibre optic networks for four out of 14 villages in the territory north of the 55 th parallel in Quebec (Canada), the Kativik Regional Government (KRG) is now considering the possibility of building a submarine fibre optic cable to serve Nunavik and other regions of northeastern Canada.
The KRG launched a public call for tenders on July 28, 2016 to get support from experts to produce a cable route and feasibility study.
This study will analyse the technical, economic, legal, operational, and scheduling aspects of bringing a submarine fibre optic cable to connect the 14 communities of Nunavik and a selected number of communities in Nunavut and Nunatsiavut.
This major investment is a step forward to offering high speed broadband to northerners in the near future.
