After last week’s reports on crude oil patches discovered on beaches in Trinidad, Petrotrin, the national oil company said it has cleaned up the oil that washed ashore the beaches along the southwestern peninsula.
On 2016 August 3 and 4 , the state-owned oil company began the clean-up activities at Mosquito Creek and along beaches in La Brea, Vessigny, Clifton Hill/ Guapo, and Cedros after confirming reports of oil sightings in these areas.
“While Petrotrin officials have completed clean-up operations, the Company continues to monitor the shoreline on a daily basis and to liaise with all stakeholders as part of its response efforts in keeping with its commitment to ensure safe and reliable operations,” the oil and gas company said in a statement on Tuesday.
The company’s previous update, dated August 5, said that Petrotrin was working on identifying the source of the oil, however, no mention of the source was given in the update on Tuesday.
Offshore Energy Today has reached out to Petrotrin, seeking more info on the source of the spill. Petrotrin did not respond at the time of writing.
According to Trinidad Express, a local news website, the oil has affected the local fishermen who were unable to fish on Sunday and Monday.
The newspaper further reports that meetings have been held between the fisherfolk representatives and Petrotrin regarding the potential financial compensation for those affected by the oil spill.
