Imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by world’s largest consumer of the chilled fuel, Japan dropped 5.4 percent in July as compared to the same month a year ago.
Japan imported 6.58 million mt of LNG in July, according to the provisional data by Japan’s Ministry of Finance.
The data showed that Japan’s LNG imports from Middle East dropped 25.8 percent to 1.27 million mt in July.
The country’s coal imports for power generation also dropped 14.4 percent to 9.31 million mt.
Japan paid about US$2.23 billion for LNG imports in June, down 43.2 percent on year, according to the ministry’s data.
To remind, the price of spot LNG cargoes arriving in Japan in July rose 33 percent from June to $6 per mmBtu on DES basis.
