John Magufuli, Tanzania’s president on Monday called on the state officials to expedite the development of a US$30 billion LNG project proposed in the area of Likon’go , Mchinga Lindi region.
In a statement issued by the president’s office, Magufuli was quoted as saying the development of the project is taking too long and noted he wants to see the start of the construction of the facility.
According to the president, the project would have a lifespan of 40 years following the start-up.
The president expressed his remarks during a meeting with Oystein Michelsen, Statoil’s Tanzania country manager.
Magufuli urged the Ministry of energy and mines to cooperate with the project participants through Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) and partners from other relevant ministries to accelerate the process towards the start of construction of the project.
Participants in the project, besides Statoil of Norway and the Tanzanian state-owned TPDC, are Shell, ExxonMobil and Ophir Energy.
Total recoverable natural gas reserves in Tanzania have been estimated to more than 57 trillion cubic feet.
