DNV GL said it is undertaking a study on LNG market in the European Union as it looks to advance the development of an EU-wide network of LNG refueling stations.
According to the classification society, DNV GL, although LNG is a viable option for bunkering, the development and demand for LNG as fuel is facing hurdles such as the uncertainty regarding its availability.
The study is being conducted on behalf of the CORE LNGas hive project co-funded by the European Commission. The project is focusing on developing a supply chain for LNG in the transport industry off the Iberian Peninsula.
The project, coordinated by Enagas is aiming to provide recommendations for Spanish and Portuguese national policy frameworks for alternative fuels supply infrastructure.
In addition, it will “prepare the roll-out plan for future commercial deployment along the Mediterranean and Atlantic corridors in the Iberian Peninsula,” DNV GL said.
The project has an overall estimated cost of €33 million and is scheduled for completion in December 2020.
