Caterpillar Marine has been selected to provide the engines for Stena Line’s four LNG-ready RoPax ferries to be constructed at AVIC Weihai Shipyard in China.
Each vessel will be equipped with Caterpillar’s two MaK propulsion engines, the company informed in its statement.
Earlier in April, Stena Line noted that the main engines will be “gas ready”, prepared to be fueled by either methanol or LNG.
In addition to the engines and required gear boxes, Caterpillar will be supplying four controllable pitch propellers.
With 3,100 lane meters in a drive-through configuration (length of 212 meters and a width of 27.8 meters), the ferries will have capacity to carry 1,000 passengers onboard, including 73 crew members.
According to Stena, the vessels are scheduled for delivery during 2019 and 2020 with an option to add four more vessels. The first four vessels are intended to be used within Stena Line’s route network in Northern Europe.
