A barge carrying out dredging works discovered an unexploded World War Two bomb on the seabed of the Portsmouth Harbour on Thursday.
The barge was preparing seabed for the arrival of the Navy’s new 65,000-tonne aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth next spring.
Royal Navy bomb disposal experts towed the device into open waters 1.5 miles (some 2.4 kilometers) east of the Isle of Wight to dispose of it in a controlled explosion.
According to Ministry of Defence, the device found is a German WWII bomb weighting 500 kilograms.
