The Hague-based Shell signed an agreement with Carnival Corporation to supply liquefied natural gas to fuel the latter’s two LNG-fueled cruise ships, due to start operating in northwest Europe and the Mediterranean in 2019.

This will be the first time LNG in dual-fuel engines will be used in the cruise industry to power ships both in port and at sea, Shell said in its statement on Monday.

Under the terms of the agreement, one Carnival cruise ship will refuel from Shell’s LNG bunker vessel that will load at the Gas Access to Europe (GATE) terminal in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The second ship is expected to refuel at one of the ports in the Western Mediterranean.

The latest deal follows Shell’s agreement with Aida Cruises, a German unit of Carnival Corporation, for the supply of liquefied natural gas to power its two LNG-fueled cruise ships, the AIDAprima and AIDAperla, when docked.

Shell, as the launching customer at GATE LNG terminal, recently loaded first LNG at the terminal’s recently opened third jetty.

The bunker-vessel Shel ordered at STX Offshore & Shipbuilding will have the capacity to carry 6,500 cubic metres of meters.
