A trade union for personnel working in the Norwegian energy sector, SAFE, on Monday said some 338 workers will go on strike unless a new deal with the Norwegian oil and gas association is reached.
SAFE said in its statement that 119 workers at Statoil’s Hammerfest LNG facility on Melkøya, 105 workers at Shell’s Nyhamna natural gas processing facility and 114 workers at ExxonMobil’s refinery in Slagen, would go on strike if the mediation scheduled for Thursday, October 6, breaks down.
The strike would lead to the stop in the delivery of oil and gas to the strike-affected facilities.
Statoil’s Hammerfest LNG facility has the capacity to produce 4.3 million tonnes per annum using gas from the Snøhvit field.
Gas from the deep-water Ormen Lange field off Norway’s coast, processed at Shell’s Nyhamna onshore plant, meets about 20 percent of the UK’s gas needs.
Roy Aleksandersen , the union’s vice-president said that for some members of the union, the newly proposed wages plan would mean a drop in wage for the third year in a row, hoping that a solution would be found.
