Italian arm of the environmental group Greenpeace was protesting against offshore drilling in Italy on Wednesday.
Members of the organization were flying on a paraglider and a flying rubber dinghy near the Vega platform, located in the Sicily channel, 20 kilometers south of Pozzallo, carrying a sign that says ‘Go solar!’ The protest is reportedly organized to urge the government to turn to renewable energy.
In production since 1987, the Vega field is operated by Edison, with a 60% working interest, and the Italian oil company Eni is its partner with 40% interest.
The Vega cluster consists of Vega A, the field currently in production. Vega A was developed with 24 wells, a platform located in 130 meters of water designed to process 60,000 barrels of oil per day and a floating storage and offloading tanker (Leonis) with a capacity of 110,000 tons to temporary store production. The crude oil is transported from the Leonis to refineries by tankers shuttles.
