India will reportedly be importing over 50 million tons a year in the future, more than doubling its current import capacity.
The country, that currently has the capacity to import 21 million tons of liquefied natural gas per year, is aiming to increase the share of natural gas in its energy mix, India’s minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan said at a news conference on Thursday, Reuters reports.
Natural gas in the country’s energy mix is expected to rise to 15 percent in the next three-to-four years, from the 6.5 percent currently, as the country moves towards the natural gas-based economy.
Local media sources quoted Pradhan as saying that the government is additionally looking to promote the use of liquefied natural gas as fuel for vehicles.
