The start-up of Qatar’s Barzan gas project has reportedly been delayed due to a leak in a gas pipeline.
Phase one of the project was scheduled to start in November, bringing Qatar’s gas production capacity up by 2 billion cubic feet per day, as the country takes steps to meet local demand before the forthcoming football world championship in 2022.
Sources told Reuters that the leak was found in one of the Barzan gas project’s upstream pipelines. The assessment of the leakage is ongoing with the start-up not likely to happen before the end of this year.
Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil signed agreements confirming the US$10 billion project in 2011.
The Barzan offshore platform is located 80 kilometers north-east of Ras Laffan Industrial City. While offshore facilities have been completed by Hyundai Heavy Industries of South Korea; onshore facilities are being constructed by JGC of Japan.
According to RasGas website, when the two Barzan gas trains begin production, RasGas-operated facilities will reach around 11 billion of cubic feet per day.
