SeaBird Exploration, a provider of seismic data to the oil and gas industry, will acquire a long-offset survey offshore Belize.

SeaBird said on Monday that it would use the Northern Explorer 2D Long Offset and source vessel to acquire the survey. The 76 meter-long vessel was built in 1986 and rebuilt in 1998.

According to latest available AIS data from Saturday, the vessel is located a few miles offshore Belize.

The company added that the anticipated duration of the program was three to four weeks. The work is expected to start in mid-October 2016.

The client, financial terms or any further details and information regarding the survey were left undisclosed.

To remind, the government of Belize banned offshore exploration drilling in all seven areas that make up the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System World Heritage area.

UNESCO said last December that the decision excludes the entire World Heritage area from any future oil exploration and makes the site consistent with the World Heritage Committee’s position that oil exploration is incompatible with World Heritage status.

The Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest reef system in the world. In 2010, the World Heritage Committee expressed concern about the potential for oil developments within and immediately adjacent to the iconic World Heritage site.
