FERC seeks additional impact information for three LNG projects in Texas

The United States Federal Energy Regulatory Commission issued requests to three LNG export projects proposed for Brownsville, Texas, seeking more information on failed rocket launch impacts.

The United States Federal Energy Regulatory Commission issued requests to three LNG projects proposed for Brownsville, Texas, seeking information on failed rocket launch impacts.

According to requests sent to Rio Grande LNG, Annova LNG and Texas LNG, these proposals involve possible citing concern posed by potential failed rocket launches from the nearby Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX)’s launch site at Boca Chica Village.

In consultation with the Federal Aviation Administration, FERC reviewed the initial responses to comments issued by the proponents of the three projects during the pre-filing stage.

The commission determined that, in order to provide adequate analysis on impacts from potential failed rocket launches, it requires more information.

FERC requested the proponents to retain and utilize a third-party organization with expertise in space launch safety analyses for the three projects to better assist in the independent review of this possible citing concern.

Rio Grande LNG, proposed by NextDecade intends to build a facility with six liquefaction trains, each with a nominal LNG output capacity of 4.5 million metric tons per year, four full containment LNG storage tanks and truck storage facilities, as well as two marine loading berths for receiving and loading LNG vessels.

The mid-scale Annova LNG export project, proposed by the indirect subsidiary of Exelon Corporation, will consist of LNG facilities and associated marine transfer facilities, including six liquefaction trains, each with a nameplate capacity of 1.0 mtpa, for an aggregate nameplate capacity of 6 mtpa and a maximum output at optimal operating conditions of 6.95 mtpa.

The LNG facilities will be designed to receive 0.9 billion cubic feet per day of feed gas via an intrastate natural gas pipeline. The facilities will include two 160,000 cbm storage tanks.

The Texas LNG facility is planned to have a production capacity of 2 mtpa of LNG with additional 2 mtpa to be added at a later date
