Rostock-headquartered ferry operator Scandlines has named M/V Copenhagen, the second of its two hybrid ferries for the Rostock-Gedser route.
The naming ceremony took place at the Danish yard Fayard A/S on October 28, 2016.
Scandlines said that M/V Copenhagen is currently undergoing a test program. In late November, the vessel is expected to start sea trials, where the maneuverability will be tested under both usual and unusual conditions.
Combining traditional diesel power with battery power, the new hybrid ferry is scheduled to go into operation before the end of the year.
Together with the sister vessel M/V Berlin , the new hybrid ferry will replace two older ferries on the crossing.
“Soon Scandlines will offer not only one but two new hybrid ferries on the Rostock-Gedser route, which has experienced growth for the last couple of years. The first few months with M/V Berlin in service even show double-digit growth rates,” the ferry operator said.
The two hybrid ferries can transport up to 2,600 passengers, 920 cars and 192 lorries between Rostock and Gedser, doubling Scandlines’ current capacity on the route.
