Gibraltar Port Authority has joined the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel, said Fabian Picardo, the chief minister of the British overseas territory located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula, next to Spain.
The government of Gibraltar in August signed an agreement with Shell for the supply of liquefied natural gas for use in power generation with potential for LNG bunkering operations in the future.
Gibraltar’s minister for maritime services, Gilbert Licudi , noted that this step will allow the port authority “to draw on the technical expertise and experience present in SGMF as it considers the possibility of LNG bunkering in the future.”
The port’s CEO, Bob Sanguinetti said that by joining the SGMF, GPA’s specialists will receive education and training in the field of LNG in the shipping environment.
Under the agreement with Shell, construction of the regasification unit is planned to start towards the end of 2016 with commissioning and first delivery of LNG expected to take place ahead of the start-up of the power plant, expected during the second half of 2017.
The facility will have five storage tanks with a total capacity of 5000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas.
