South Korea’s Kogas, the world’s largest corporate buyer of LNG, is reportedly planning to build new LNG bunkering infrastructure at Tongyeong by 2019.
The facility is a part of wider efforts to develop LNG bunkering infrastructure in South Korea against the backdrop of stricter environmental regulations.
The $9 million investment includes construction of loading arms and a quay, Platts reported citing a Kogas official as saying.
Small LNG fuelled ships that are less than 100 meters long will be able to anchor at the facility’s jetty and bunker directly the chilled fuel, the report said.
South Korea is looking to increase the number of LNG-fueled ships and develop bunkering infrastructure in order to meet the global cap on sulphur content for marine fuels that will come into effect from January 2020.
International Maritime Organization made the decision in October to limit the sulphur content of marine fuels to 0.5 percent.
It represents a significant cut from the 3.5 percent global limit currently in place.
