Japan’s Nov LNG imports climb almost 13 pct YoY

Japan, the world’s largest consumer of liquefied natural gas (LNG), boosted its imports of the chilled fuel by 12.7 percent in November year-on-year.

Japan imported 7.54 million mt of LNG in November, according to the provisional data released by Japan’s Ministry of Finance.

The preliminary data also shows that the country’s coal imports for power generation rose 2.2 percent to 10.22 million mt.

Japan paid about $2.57 billion for LNG imports in November, a drop of 20.6 percent on year, according to the ministry’s data.

To remind, the price of spot LNG cargoes arriving in Japan in November rose almost 15 percent from October to $7 per mmBtu on DES basis.

The November contract-based price was the highest since January 2016 when the price stood at $7.1 per mmBtu.
