The United States Department of Energy has issued an order granting Elba Island liquefaction project the authorization to export LNG to non-free trade agreement nations.
Under the order, Elba Island LNG project is authorized to export 4 million tons of liquefied natural gas per year from the terminal in Chatham County, Georgia, to any country with which the United States does not have a free trade agreement, for a period of 20 years.
Elba Island liquefaction project will be constructed and operated at the existing Elba Island LNG terminal.
Initial liquefaction units for the $2 billion project are expected to be placed in service in mid-2018, with final units coming on line by early 2019, reaching total production capacity of 2.5 million tons per year. The project is supported by a 20-year contract with Shell.
Kinder Morgan units, Elba Liquefaction Company and Southern LNG Company have already been authorized by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to commence begin the work related to the South Channel barge dock construction, including dredging and in-water pile driving.
In 2012, the Elba liquefaction project received authorization from the Department of Energy to export to Free Trade Agreement (FTA) countries.
