Oil company Lundin has received consent from the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) in Norway to drill an exploration well in the Barents Sea with the Leiv Eiriksson drilling rig.
The well 7120/1-5 will be drilled in Lundin-operated production licence 492, comprising blocks 7120/1 and 7120/2. The Barents Sea prospect where the well will be drilled is named Gohta.
Lundin recently got a drilling permit from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate to drill this well.
The drilling location is around 185 kilometers north-west of Hammerfest. Water depth at the site is 368 meters. Drilling is scheduled to begin in late December 2016 and estimated to last 73 days. There will also be a potential well test.
The well is to be drilled using the Leiv Eiriksson semi-submersible drilling rig, which is owned and operated by Ocean Rig. The rig is a BINGO 9000 type, built in 2001. It is classified by DNV GL and registered in the Bahamas.
Ocean Rig received Acknowledgement of Compliance (AoC) for Leiv Eiriksson from the PSA in July 2008.
