Danish transmission system operator Energinet.dk, Fugro and subcontractor Boskalis have completed an unexploded ordnance (UXO) survey along the planned cable routes for a grid connecting the 600MW Kriegers Flak wind farm in the Baltic Sea.

The survey was carried out in October 2016, Jens Christian Hygebjerg, Energinet.dk’s Chief Project Manager, Project Execution, told Offshore WIND.

”A number of objects was identified and investigated further. Five objects have been neutralized by the Royal Danish Navy,” Hygebjerg said.

The purpose of the survey and the subsequent services was to reduce the risk level at the installation area along the cable route to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP).

The Kriegers Flak Grid Connection will be in operation by the end of 2018 and become a part of the world’s first combined wind farm grid connection and interconnector – connecting Denmark and Germany.

The Kriegers Flak Combined Grid Solution (CGS) is a joint project between Energinet.dk and Germany’s 50Hz Transmission to interconnect the Danish and German grid via two offshore wind farms, Kriegers Flak and Germany’s 288MW Baltic 2.

The two transmission system operators are planning to install a high voltage alternating current (HVAC) cable between offshore substations located at the two offshore wind farms. The planned cable route is approximately 25 kilometres long.

The Kriegers Flak CGS will connect the Danish region of Sjaelland and German Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The interconnector is planned to start operating by the end of 2018.

NOTE: The original article was edited on Tuesday, 3 January, at 13:40 pm CET. The UXO survey was carried out along Kriegers Flak Grid Connection cable routes, and not along Kriegers Flak Combined Grid Solution cable routes as initially reported.
