On January 1, the Port of Montreal in Canada welcomed the Chem Sirius, the first ocean-going vessel in 2017 to cross its downstream limits at Sorel without a stopover.
The 20,000 dwt chemical tanker left the Port of Antwerp in Belgium on December 19, 2016.
The Chem Sirius is operated by the Netherlands-based shipping firm Ace Tankers and represented in Montreal by the SMK Tanker Agency.
Built at Japanese Fukuoka shipyard in 2011, the tanker features a length of 142.2 meters and a width of 24.2 meters.
On January 4, 2017, the port awarded the 178th Gold-Headed Cane at the ceremony celebrating the arrival each year of the first ocean-going ship to reach Montreal without a stopover.
Operated by the Montreal Port Authority (MPA), the Port of Montreal is the second largest port in Canada, handling containerized and non-containerized cargo, liquid bulk and dry bulk.
