Spanish LNG terminal operator, Enagás, said that daily natural gas demand in the country had reached a record high on Wednesday due to cold weather.

The cold snap that hit most of Europe did not avoid Spain bringing lower temperatures, rain, wind and snow to the peninsula.

Spanish daily natural gas demand reached 1.502,1 GWh on Wednesday. This figure exceeds the previous record of 1,445 GWh registered in December last year, and is the highest number Since February 2012, Enagás said in its statement.

According to the Spanish utility, conventional demand for natural gas, targeted at household, commercial and industrial consumption reached 1,229.2 GWh, representing the fourth-highest recorded value ever.

Enagás noted in the statement that more records could be broken as Spain’s meteorological agency, Aemet expects lower temperatures to remain throughout the country in the next few days.

To remind, Spain’s LNG imports in December rose over 61 percent year-on-year due to cold weather and as average temperature recorded during the month had been 1.1ºC below that recorded during December in 2015.

LNG imports reached 20.2 terawatt hours (TWh) in December 2016, as compared to 12.5 TWh in the corresponding month a year ago.
