The United Kindom expects to import more natural gas from Norway as it is looking to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
This was revealed on Friday after the UK Energy Minister Jesse Norman and his Norwegian counterpart Terje Søviknes held their first meeting in Oslo.
“British interest in Norwegian gas is set to grow as the UK looks to phase out power generation from unabated coal in the transition to a lower carbon energy mix,” a joint statement said.
“Electricity interconnection represents an additional feature in our energy partnership. A stable and market based framework for the interconnector development is important to both countries,” the statement added.
Norway is the largest supplier of natural gas to the UK.
Britain is also one of the world’s largest importers of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The country sources the chilled fuel mainly from the world’s top LNG exporter, Qatar.
