Malaysian energy giant Petronas could relocate its Pacific NorthWest LNG project in British Columbia, should the Canadian authorities request such a move.
Mohd Sidek Hassan , Petronas chairman, said the company has to take into account the possibility of the project being poorly sited, the Malaysian national news agency Bernama reports.
It was reported in December that the Malaysian company could relocate the docking facilities to the neighboring Ridley Island. The move would eliminate the suspension bridge, reducing the costs as well as the environmental impact.
The US$27 billion project received the environmental approval from the Canadian government in September 2016, and Petronas is currently reviewing the LNG market outlook and overall project commerciality before it develops the proposal for the final investment decision. The company intends to review the impacts on the overall cost structure and schedule of the project.
The proposed facility, to be located on Lelu Island within the District of Port Edward, will comprise an initial development of two LNG trains of approximately 6 million tons per annum each, and a subsequent development of the third train of approximately 6 mtpa.
