Gazprom’s gas exports to the Greek market in 2016 reached 2.68 billion cubic meters, 35 percent increase from the volumes recorded in 2015.
The upward trend continued in January and February 2017 as Greek gas imports from Russie grew 20.6 percent compared to the same two months in 2016.
The figures were discussed during the meeting between Gazprom’s head Alexey Miller and Giorgos Tsipras, secretary general for international economic relations at the Greek ministry of foreign affairs.
The two parties also discussed the development prospects, focusing on securing the transit of Russian gas across Greece to Italy as part of the TurkStream project.
Both parties noted the project is a step towards diversification of supply routes and energy security in Greece and other countries of the region.
The TurkStream project is a gas export pipeline stretching across the Black Sea from Russia to Turkey and further to Turkey’s border with neighboring countries.
The first string of the gas pipeline is intended for Turkish consumers, while the second string will deliver gas to southern and southeastern Europe. Each string will have the throughput capacity of 15.75 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
