Pakistan’s Sui Northern Gas Pipelines has approved the investment of PKR 110.5 billion (Approx: US$1 billion) for a 1200 mmcfd pipeline from Karachi to Lahore.
The Government of Pakistan decided to import additional 1200 mmcfd of LNG through the upcoming LNG terminals in the country to meet the increasing gas demand of all sectors which called for the development of a second pipeline.
The pipeline will be developed in two stages, a 42-inch pipeline from Sawan to Qilla Satar Shah, near Lahore (780 kilometers in length) and a 36-inch, 130 kilometers long pipeline connecting to the existing gas transmission system.
According to the SNGPL’s filing to the Pakistan Stock Exchange the project is set for completion in October 2018.
The country began importing LNG in March 2015 using the Excelerate Energy’s 150,900-cbm FSRU Exquisite, chartered by Engro Elengy, located at the Port Qasim in Karachi.
Singapore-based BW, signed a 15-year agreement with Pakistan GasPort Limited (PGPL) to provide a newbuild FSRU, that has recently been named FSRU BW Integrity at Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard.
In addition, Pakistan’s Global Energy Infrastructure Limited signed a 20-year FSRU contract with Höegh LNG for its import project in Port Qasim near Karachi. The project, being developed by GEIL has recently received support from a consortium of industry majors comprising Höegh LNG, Qatar Petroleum, Total, Mitsubishi and ExxonMobil.
