The first of four Neo-Panamax ship-to-shore (STS) cranes has become operational at the Port of Savannah’s Garden City Terminal.
Garden City Terminal plans to add another crane every two weeks until late April.
The four cranes arrived at the port in December 2016, bringing the port’s total to 26, more than any other terminal in the US.
Designed by Konecranes of Finland, the enormous cranes can serve the largest ships which started calling on the US East Coast following the opening of the Expanded Panama Canal.
Port officials said another four Neo-Panamax cranes are on order and will be commissioned in 2018.
The growing crane fleet will be able to handle more than 1,000 container moves per hour when all 30 cranes are in place, according to Georgia Port Authority.
