Liquefied natural gas (LNG) production at Russia’s only liquefaction and export plant Sakhalin II was reportedly suspended on Sunday, March 26, following an accident at one of the production platforms.
Gas leak detected at the Lunskaya A platform on Sunday halted the production, a spokeswoman for Sakhalin Energy, the project operator, told Reuters.
The gas leak has already been eliminated, the spokeswoman added noting that some of the platform’s staff have been evacuated, according to the report.
It is unclear when the production of the chilled fuel is expected to restart.
LNG World News invited Sakhalin Energy for a comment.
The Sakhalin II project has a nameplate capacity of 9.6 mtpa of LNG per year. The shareholders in Sakhalin Energy are Gazprom (50 percent plus one share), Shell (27.5 percent minus one share), Mitsui (12.5 percent) and Mitsubishi (10 percent).
