Italian oil company Eni has made a new gas and condensate discovery in the Gamma Prospect in Tripoli-Sabratah Basin, offshore Libya.

The discovery exploration well B1-16/3 is located approximately 140 kilometers from the Libyan Capital Tripoli City and five kilometers to the north of the producing Bahr Essalam gas field.

Eni spud the exploration well B1-16/3 located in the Contract Area D, block NC41, in early January . The main objective of the well was to test the Metlaoui group reservoir.

The Italian oil company is the operator of the license where the discovery is located with Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) as its partner. The area was granted to Eni under an exploration and production sharing agreement IV (EPSA IV) contract model signed with NOC in June 2008.

According to a Tuesday statement by Libya’s NOC, the well was drilled in water depth of about 150 m and reached a total depth of 9780 feet (2981 meter).

Eni said later on Wednesday that the drilling of the Gamma prospect is part of its “near field” exploration strategy, targeting opportunities that in case of success can exploit synergies with existing infrastructures reducing the time to market and providing additional gas to the local market and export.

The Italian company further said that the well has the capacity to deliver, in production configuration, in excess of 7,000 boepd.
