Polish gas transmission operator, Gaz-System has decided to expand the country’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in Swinoujscie.
The facility would be upgraded to have a capacity of 7.5 billion cubic meters per year instead of the current 5 bcm/y, Gaz-System said on Thursday.
The company, with its unit Polskie LNG, is currently preparing to launch the tender procedure for the execution of front end engineering design (FEED) work and is working on obtaining the construction permit.
The expansion work includes the addition of a second berth, the addition of a third storage tank with Gaz-System planning to develop LNG bunkering facilities.
In addition, the company is looking to advance the supply of LNG as fuel for the transport industry as well as to develop facilities enabling it to deliver LNG by rail.
Speaking of the LNG terminal expansion decision, Tomasz Stępień , CEO of Gaz-System, said it aims to establish the Polish terminal as an active player in the changing LNG market in central and eastern Europe.
The President Lech Kaczynski LNG terminal, operated by Gaz-System’s unit Polskie LNG, is Poland’s flagship project to diversify gas supplies and reduce dependence on pipeline imports from Russia.
To advance these efforts, Gaz-System said at the end of March that the company has completed the tendering procedure related to the feasibility study for the FSRU project in the Bay of Gdansk located on the Baltic Sea.
