GLDD Makes Progress on the Willoughby Spit Project

Works on the Willoughby Spit and Vicinity beach nourishment project are now more than 59% complete, according to the the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District.

Eight weeks into the project, the Corps contractor Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company has placed over 702,000 cubic yards of sand onto the beach.

In total, it will take around 1.2 million cubic yards of sand to complete this 34.5 million worth beach nourishment project.

According to USACE, this week crews have been working around the Ocean View fishing pier, widening the beach by approx 60 feet.

If all goes according to schedule, the Corps expect to complete the beach nourishment this May.
