In its efforts to diversify the supply sources of liquefied natural gas, Poland secured a spot cargo delivery of U.S. LNG to its import terminal President Lech Kaczyński in Swinoujscie.
The agreement was signed during the Polish secretary of state and chief of the cabinet of the president, Krzysztof Szczerski ‘s visit to Washington, according to a statement by the president’s office.
Szczerski said this is the first contract securing an LNG cargo delivery from the United States to Poland, adding that it will also become the first country in the region to receive the U.S. LNG.
In a brief social media comment, Polish embassy in Washington, DC, added that the contract was signed with the Houston-based LNG player Cheniere. The cargo is set to be delivered by mid-June Piotr Woźniak , CEO of the Polish gas transmission operator, Gaz-System, told the Polish Press Agency.
Cheniere is developing up to six trains at Sabine Pass with each train expected to have a nominal production capacity of approximately 4.5 million tons per annum.
Polish LNG terminal operated by Gaz-System’s unit Polskie LNG, is Poland’s flagship project to diversify gas supplies and reduce dependence on pipeline imports from Russia.
The state-owned Gaz-System, made the decision to increase the terminal’s capacity from the current 5 billion cubic meters per year to 7.5 bcm/y.
