Heron Construction Company Ltd. has been selected as the contractor for the Eden Breakwater Wharf extension project.
According to the East Coast Radio, Heron will carry out dredging works that signal the start of the $44 million project.
“ In the next 12 months the NSW Government will be delivering $24 million of a promised $32 million for the wharf extension ,” said Minister for Lands and Forestry, Paul Toole , during his recent visit to Eden.
The construction of the wharf extension will include dredging of up to 230,000 cubic meters of material to improve access, extending the existing wharf by approximately 110 meters, installation of berthing and mooring dolphins, installation of landside bollards and installation of minor services (lighting, power and potable water).
NSW Department of Industry – Lands reported that the dredging works are set to begin in August 2017 and the completion of the whole project is expected in 2019.
When completed, the Breakwater Wharf Extension project will allow cruise ships up to 325 meters to berth at the wharf.
Federal Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash recently commented that the project would help build a bigger tourist industry in the region. “ Eden and the Sapphire Coast will be discovered by visitors from around the globe when the cruise ships start landing, ” Minister Nash said.
The Eden Breakwater Wharf Extension project is jointly funded by the NSW Government ($32 million), Australian Government ($10 million), and the Bega Valley Shire Council ($2 million).
