Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company (GLDD) from Oak Brook, Illinois, has won a $26.3 million contract for the Myrtle Beach storm damage reduction project, according to the U.S. Department of Defense’s (DoD) latest announcement.
Bids were solicited via the Internet with three received, DoD said.
The work consists of dredging beach fill from an offshore borrow area located approximately 2 miles offshore, and placement of the material onto the beaches.
The project will be performed in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with an estimated completion date of July 14, 2017.
The protective storm berm reduces damages expected to occur during severe storm events. The advanced nourishment berm acts as a buffer for the protective storm berm against long term erosional forces.
This beach fill work includes complying with the requirements of the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammals Protection Act.
